Understand Gray Media, Inc.: how it makes money

Gray Media owns and operates U.S. television stations and related digital channels, and it makes money primarily from broadcast advertising and from retransmission consent fees.

Because revenue is heavily split between Core (advertising and related) and Retransmission, profitability is structurally driven by the companys ability to keep retransmission consent terms in place and maintain local and national advertising demand.

Revenue by segment (latest quarter)
Core$0.4B
Retransmission$0.4B

Business quality (Weak): Clear revenue drivers, two dominant categories (Core and Retransmission), and a reported operating margin of 10.5% for the latest period. Key downside risk is concentration in advertising and retransmission economics.

Bull case

  • Retransmission is a major revenue source: Latest quarter revenue shows Retransmission at 0.38B, indicating a significant portion of the profit engine is tied to retransmission consent.
  • Core advertising is also material: Latest quarter revenue shows Core Advertising at 0.39B, supporting the idea that station and digital monetization is diversified across advertising and consent-related streams.

Bear case

  • Economic sensitivity to advertising demand: Core Advertising is a large part of revenue, so weaker ad markets can pressure results.
  • Negotiation and renewal risk in retransmission: Retransmission Consent Revenue is a large part of revenue, so changes in consent terms or renewals can impact cash flow and earnings.
