Understand Amerant Bancorp Inc.: how it makes money

Amerant Bancorp is a bank holding company that provides deposit products (checking, savings, money market accounts, and CDs) and commercial and real estate lending (including owner-occupied property secured loans and working capital and asset-based lending), earning primarily from its lending and deposit business.

Amerant's profit model depends on how effectively it uses customer deposits to fund lending (Loan to Deposit Ratio), while keeping operations efficient (Efficiency Ratio) and limiting loan losses (Coverage Provided by Loan Loss Reserve to Non-Performing Loans).

Business quality (Weak): Strength appears tied to efficiency and deposit funding, but the key vulnerability is credit risk in its commercial and real estate lending book.

Valuation: At 18× earnings, AMTB trades 42% above the Banking average (13×). Note: one-time items can distort reported P/E.

Bull case

  • Efficient operations: The Efficiency Ratio is 68.52 percent (latest quarter provided), suggesting the company is controlling operating costs relative to its revenue base.
  • Deposit-funded lending: The Loan to Deposit Ratio is 85.07 percent, indicating a relatively deposit-supported balance sheet for funding its loan activities.

Bear case

  • Credit risk in its lending focus: Because the company provides variable and fixed rate commercial real estate loans and other secured commercial and individual loans, adverse credit performance could pressure results.
  • Coverage could be stressed by losses: Coverage Provided by Loan Loss Reserve to Non-Performing Loans is 0.9 (latest quarter provided), which can leave less room if non-performing loans rise faster than reserves.
