Understand United Bankshares, Inc.: how it makes money

United Bankshares provides commercial and retail banking in the United States, taking customer deposits and making loans, and it also operates mortgage banking, earning money primarily from lending and related banking activities.

The profit model depends on loan earning power (Yield on Average Net Loans and Loans Held for Sale) and the credit cost of those loans (Non-Performing Loans and Net Charge-Offs).

Business quality (Solid): Credit metrics in the latest quarter are trackable through non-performing loans, NPAs, net charge-offs, and related allowance coverage, which can help explain whether lending yields are translating into durable earnings.

Valuation: At 12× earnings, UBSI trades in line with the Banking average (13×). Note: one-time items can distort reported P/E.

Bull case

  • Loan credit quality can be monitored closely: Non-Performing Loans as a Percentage of Loans and Leases was 0.41 percent, and net charge-offs were 0.01 USD_B in the latest quarter.
  • Earnings reflect both operating performance and loan earning power: Operating margin was 37.5 percent in the latest quarter, supported by a Yield on Average Net Loans and Loans Held for Sale of 6.07 percent.

Bear case

  • Asset quality can pressure earnings if credit deteriorates: Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) were 0.07 USD_B, and changes in non-performing loans or net charge-offs can directly raise credit costs.
  • Allowance strength matters during downturns: Allowance for Loan and Lease Losses as a Percentage of Loans and Leases was 1.21 percent, which may be less helpful if credit losses rise faster than reserves.
