Understand Republic Services, Inc.: how it makes money

Republic Services provides environmental services, including curbside collection of waste and recyclables, container supply and rental, transfer and disposal of non-hazardous solid waste, and processing and commodity sales related to recyclables. It makes money through recurring collection revenue plus fees tied to downstream transfer, landfill, and recycling processing activities.

Waste collection is the upstream, recurring activity, and it feeds downstream operations (transfer, landfill, and recycling processing and commodity sales), so volume and routing through the system drive how much revenue the company can generate across multiple parts of the waste chain.

Revenue by segment (latest quarter)
Collection$2.8B
Landfill$0.5B
Transfer$0.4B
EnvSol$0.4B

Business quality (Mixed): Business description is clear, and the latest-quarter operating metrics provided point to collection as the key driver. However, the provided segment revenue candidates do not clearly reconcile to the stated total revenue figure, so segment-level interpretation should be treated as directional.

Valuation: At 31× earnings, RSG trades 52% above the Other average (20×). Note: one-time items can distort reported P/E.

Bull case

  • Service breadth across the waste chain (collection, transfer, disposal, and recycling processing) can support multiple revenue sources rather than relying on a single step: The company provides curbside collection, container supply and rental, transfer, and landfill and recycling processing and commodity sales.
  • A meaningful residential collection base may help create steadier demand characteristics versus purely industrial or one-off services: The company reports residential revenue as a distinct collection-related revenue line.

Bear case

  • Downstream economics can be pressured if landfill, transfer, or environmental solutions businesses face cost or fee pressures: The company’s revenue includes landfill, transfer, and environmental solutions, which depend on operational and fee conditions at those steps of the chain.
  • Recycling-related revenue may be more sensitive than core collection because it includes recycling processing and commodity sales: The company reports revenue from recycling processing and commodity sales.
