Understand Garmin Ltd.: how it makes money

Garmin designs and sells GPS-connected wireless devices, from running and cycling watches to marine chartplotters and cockpit avionics, to consumers, marine dealers, and airline OEMs. Fitness is the growth engine at 31% of revenue, while marine, aviation, and outdoor segments fund steady cash flow from institutional and enthusiast buyers.

Garmin controls the full device stack, from custom silicon to the Connect software platform, across five non-overlapping verticals, sustaining 59% gross margins without ever competing in mass-market consumer electronics.

Business quality (Solid): A high-margin, diversified device maker posting 59% gross margins and 19% ROE, trading 16% below its semiconductor-industry P/E multiple. Business quality grade: Solid.

Valuation: At 32× earnings, GRMN trades 16% below the Semiconductors average (39×).

Bull case

  • Supply constrained, demand intact: Management flagged that Circa component demand exceeded expectations and created backorders, and that the new Thailand facility could double company-wide capacity. If supply is the binding constraint, the demand ceiling is well above current shipments.
  • Aviation compounding across channels: Aviation demand remains strong across both OEM and aftermarket markets per management, and Aviation Revenue posted $260M (+18.3% YoY), making it the second-fastest-growing segment behind Fitness.
  • Valuation discount to peers: At 32.4x forward P/E, Garmin trades 16% below the 39x semiconductor-industry average while posting a 59% gross margin and 25% operating margin, leaving room for re-rating if growth persists.

Bear case

  • Memory costs hit H2 margins: Management expects higher memory costs to pressure second-half results, a direct threat to the 59% gross margin that underpins the entire earnings model.
  • Outdoor segment losing momentum: Outdoor Revenue declined to $420M (-4.8% YoY) driven by weaker Consumer Auto and adventure-watch sales, eroding the segment that historically anchored the company's core identity.
  • Marine margin boost was one-time: Management acknowledged that Marine margin expansion primarily reflected a one-time tariff refund, meaning the underlying pricing power in that segment is thinner than the reported numbers suggest.
