Bull case

  • Leasing and management can provide more recurring visibility than one-time product sales, supported by the presence of Future Contractual Lease Revenues in the disclosures provided: This aligns with Trinity earning leasing revenue and managing railcar leases, plus providing fleet maintenance and management services.
  • Scale in the railcar fleet can support the leasing and services model: As of December 31, 2021, Trinity had a fleet of 106,970 owned or leased railcars.

Bear case

  • If lease economics weaken, leasing and management results can come under pressure: Trinity’s leasing and services segment activity depends on originating and managing railcar leases and generating lease revenue, which may be sensitive to changes in railcar demand and the terms of leases.
  • Rail products results can be cyclical versus leasing and management: Trinity also generates revenue from the Rail Products Group segment, which is exposed to demand for rail transportation products and services.
