Understand Patrick Industries, Inc.: how it makes money

Patrick Industries manufactures and distributes components and building products for recreational vehicles, marine, manufactured housing, and industrial markets, and it makes money by selling these manufactured and fabricated items to customers in those end markets.

Because most of Patrick Industries’ revenue comes from supplying manufactured components and building products into the RV, housing, and marine end markets, its operating profit largely follows changes in customer build activity there, and is constrained by its relatively low operating margin (6.5%).

Revenue by segment (latest quarter)
RV$0.5B
Housing$0.3B
Marine$0.2B

Business quality (Mixed): Clear end-market exposure (RV, housing, marine) and positive profitability in the latest period, but the profit model can be sensitive to demand swings in those industries and to margin pressure at the operating level.

Valuation: At 25× earnings, PATK trades 23% above the Automobiles & Trucks average (20×). Note: one-time items can distort reported P/E.

Bull case

  • End-market breadth across recreational vehicles, housing, and marine products: The company’s revenue mix spans multiple customer markets it serves with manufactured components and building products.
  • Evidence of profitability in the latest reported period: Gross margin is 22.8% and operating margin is 6.5% for the period ending 2026-03-29.

Bear case

  • Cyclical end-market demand risk: If activity in recreational vehicles, marine, or manufactured housing slows, customers may reduce orders for the company’s components and building products.
  • Operating margin sensitivity: With an operating margin of 6.5%, relatively small unfavorable changes in costs or demand can materially impact operating income.
