Understand The Charles Schwab Corporation: how it makes money

Charles Schwab provides wealth management, securities brokerage, banking, custody, and financial advisory services, and it earns money from net interest revenue, trading revenue, and other revenue.

Schwab’s profit model is driven by a mix of net interest revenue (banking-related interest income) plus trading revenue and other revenue, so performance depends on both its interest-related income stream and its trading-related revenue stream.

Business quality (Strong): Clear description of Schwab’s service lines and revenue components (net interest, trading, other). However, segment-level revenue split between Investor Services and Advisor Services is not provided here, limiting segment-level insight.

Valuation: At 18× earnings, SCHW trades 46% below the Trading average (34×). Note: one-time items can distort reported P/E.

Bull case

  • Multiple revenue streams: Revenue includes net interest revenue, trading revenue, and other revenue, which supports a more diversified earnings mix than a single-stream model.
  • Strong operating profitability (as given): Operating margin is reported at 49.2% for the latest period shown.

Bear case

  • Exposure to interest and trading revenue swings: Because net revenues include both net interest revenue and trading revenue, adverse changes in either stream could pressure results.
  • Smaller non-interest components may be meaningful: Trading revenue and other revenue are sizable but smaller than net interest revenue in the figures provided, so changes in these components can still move total results.
