Understand Porch Group, Inc.: how it makes money

Porch Group runs a software platform for home services and related consumer services, and it also has an Insurance segment that earns revenue tied to insurance written premiums and its insurance operations.

Porch has a two-part profit engine, insurance economics driven by underwriting results (for example, gross combined ratio) and insurance policy scale, plus Vertical Software revenue tied to how home services and consumer users use its platform.

Revenue by segment (latest quarter)
Insurance$0.1B
Vertical SW$0.0B

Business quality (Weak): Clear two-segment structure (Insurance and Vertical Software) with insurance-style operating metrics (gross combined ratio and policies in force), but the publicly provided data here shows small overall scale and leaves limited detail on software monetization drivers.

Bull case

  • Insurance underwriting performance is tracked via a gross combined ratio of 89: A single, industry-standard profitability metric helps investors gauge whether insurance operations are staying on track.
  • Customer retention and churn metrics are provided, with customer retention rate at 89% and monthly churn rate at 1%: This supports the idea that the platform and insurance customer base can be sticky, which can stabilize results.

Bear case

  • Insurance results depend on loss and combined ratio behavior (gross combined ratio is 89, gross loss ratio for the Insurance Segment is 56): Any adverse change in these underwriting metrics can pressure profitability.
  • Scale appears limited in the latest quarter, with revenue around 0.1B: Small scale can make results more sensitive to changes in insurance volume, retention, or software adoption.
