Understand Nelnet, Inc.: how it makes money

Nelnet provides loan servicing and related systems, education technology services, and payment processing, earning money from fees tied to servicing and processing borrower and loan activity.

Profitability is driven by recurring fee revenue that scales with the size of the serviced student loan portfolio and the number of borrowers, which then supports operating margins.

Business quality (Solid): The business looks like a fee-and-services model with high reported gross and operating margins, but results are closely tied to servicing volumes and balances, so changes in servicing activity or loan program dynamics are key watch items.

Valuation: At 12× earnings, NNI trades 8% below the Banking average (13×). Note: one-time items can distort reported P/E.

Bull case

  • Servicing scale can be measured and tracked: The company highlights Government-Owned and Private Loan Servicing Volume and Borrowers Serviced, which helps connect activity levels to its recurring services.
  • Operations show strong reported profitability: In the latest reported period, Nelnet reported gross margin of 75.4% and operating margin of 35.8%.

Bear case

  • Volume and balance sensitivity: If Government-Owned and Private Loan Servicing Volume or borrowers serviced decline, fee revenue from servicing and related services could be pressured.
  • Program and regulatory exposure: Because the servicing business is focused on government-owned and private student loan servicing, changes in student loan program rules or servicing requirements could reduce activity.
