Understand Zebra Technologies Corporation: how it makes money

Zebra Technologies designs, manufactures, and sells automatic identification and data capture printers, including printers that produce labels, wristbands, tickets, receipts, and plastic cards, as well as thermal card and RFID printers, and it earns revenue from net sales across two segments, Asset Intelligence and Tracking and Enterprise Visibility and Mobility.

The company’s profit is structurally driven by selling enterprise printers across two solution segments, so its results depend on ongoing demand for hardware-based automatic identification and data capture in those use cases.

Revenue by segment (latest quarter)
EVM$0.9B
AIT$0.6B

Business quality (Mixed): Clear segment structure and identifiable product categories (labels, cards, thermal card imaging, RFID encoding), but investors have limited visibility here on recurring revenue drivers and operating KPIs because no operating metrics were provided.

Valuation: At 31× earnings, ZBRA trades 9% below the Machinery average (34×). Note: one-time items can distort reported P/E.

Bull case

  • Two focused solution segments: Zebra operates in Asset Intelligence and Tracking and Enterprise Visibility and Mobility, covering enterprise asset intelligence solutions.
  • Broad printer applications: Its printers produce labels, wristbands, tickets, receipts, and plastic cards, and its thermal card printers produce images used for personal identification, access control, and financial transactions.
  • RFID data encoding: Its RFID printers encode data, supporting automatic identification and data capture use cases.

Bear case

  • Reliance on printer demand: Because Zebra designs, manufactures, and sells printers, results can be sensitive to changes in enterprise spending on automatic identification and data capture equipment.
  • Execution and product mix risk: With results split across two segments, unfavorable shifts in the relative mix or adoption of printer types used for different applications could pressure performance.
  • Limited operating KPI visibility here: No operating KPIs were provided, which makes it harder for investors to track the day-to-day drivers of performance beyond reported financial margins and net sales.
