Understand Veralto Corporation: how it makes money

Veralto provides water analytics and water treatment, marking and coding, and packaging and color solutions, and it makes money by selling instruments, technologies, chemical reagents, services, and related digital solutions to customers across residential, commercial, municipal, industrial, research, and natural resource applications.

Its profit model is structurally supported by recurring revenue within Product Quality & Innovation (recurring revenue mix is 63%) and a large direct-to-customer chemistry mix (Chemtree is 75%), which together indicate more repeatable revenue drivers versus purely one-time equipment sales.

Revenue by segment (latest quarter)
WQ$0.8B
PQI$0.6B

Business quality (Solid): Veralto sells two clear business lines, with operating focus on how much of PQI sales is recurring (63%) and how much chemistry is delivered directly to customers (75%), which can support stability but also means results could be sensitive to changes in those mixes.

Valuation: At 21× earnings, VLTO trades 65% below the Measuring & Control Equipment average (60×). Note: one-time items can distort reported P/E.

Bull case

  • Recurring revenue mix in PQI: A reported 63% of Product Quality & Innovation mix is recurring, which can make results less dependent on purely transactional demand.
  • Direct-to-customer chemistry contribution: Chemtree direct-to-customer sales mix is 75%, indicating a sizable portion of chemistry-related sales flows through direct channels.
  • Ongoing investment in innovation: Research and development is reported at 5.1% of sales, supporting continued product and technology development.

Bear case

  • Sensitivity to recurring and direct mix: Because recurring revenue mix (63%) and Chemtree direct-to-customer mix (75%) are large components of the operating drivers, any decline in those mixes could reduce revenue quality.
  • R&D spend may pressure near-term returns: With research and development at 5.1% of sales, if new offerings take longer to monetize than expected, spending could weigh on profitability.
