Understand Bio-Techne Corp: how it makes money

Bio-Techne sells the reagents, antibodies, and cell-culture products that researchers and drug-makers consume daily, alongside diagnostic instruments and tests. Protein Sciences supplies roughly 77% of revenue on recurring reagent sales, while Diagnostics and Spatial Biology is the smaller, instrument-led growth sleeve.

Once a lab installs Bio-Techne's IP-protected reagents (proprietary antibodies, cytokines), it pays a 67-gross-margin refill bill every quarter; the instruments seed the install base, the consumables keep the cash flowing.

Revenue by segment (latest quarter)
Protein Sciences$0.2B
Diagnostics & Spatial Biology$0.1B

Business quality (Mixed): High-margin reagent moat (67% gross) on a ~$1.2B annual run-rate, but revenue just turned negative and the 75.6x multiple prices in a biotech-funded recovery that has not yet appeared.

Valuation: At 76× earnings, TECH trades 341% above the Pharmaceutical Products average (17×).

Bull case

  • Pharma demand stays double-digit: Management reports that large pharma has produced repeated double-digit growth in the quarter, confirming the reagent base expands as drug development intensity rises.
  • Comet backlog drives multi-year pump: Spatial biology shows strong Comet momentum with a record backlog, meaning instrument deployments will convert into recurring assay revenue over the next several quarters.
  • GMP protein growth near 50%: Excluding two lumpy fast-track cell-therapy customers, GMP protein growth approached 50% (per management commentary), signaling genuine underlying momentum in the cell-and-gene-therapy reagent opportunity.

Bear case

  • Biotech wallet still closed: Emerging biotech revenue declined high single digits and remains the main growth constraint; management's own Q4 base case assumes no biotech improvement, so the softness persists into quarter four.
  • Volume deleverage squeezes margin: Adjusted operating margin fell year over year as weaker biotech volumes and a less favorable product mix reduced fixed-cost leverage, turning the once-predictable 24% operating margin into a line that can move both ways.
  • Multiple prices in full recovery: At 75.6x earnings versus a 17x pharmaceutical-industry average (341% above peers), the stock embeds a V-shaped biotech rebound; any further funding delay hits the multiple before it hits the cash flow.
