Understand Plug Power Inc.: how it makes money

Plug Power builds clean hydrogen and zero-emissions fuel cell solutions, it makes money by selling electrolyzers and related infrastructure and services, plus generating revenue from hydrogen-related operations such as cryogenic sector sales, fuel delivered, and power purchase agreements.

The profit engine is tied to executing hydrogen infrastructure projects, because reported revenue mix includes electrolyzer-related items (including GenEco electrolyzer revenue) and cryogenic and fuel delivery activities, while revenue and results can be directly impacted by electrolyzer negative factors and operational delays.

Business quality (Weak): Profitability is currently negative (gross margin -13.2%, operating margin -67.0%), so investors likely need to focus on execution of electrolyzer and hydrogen production KPIs to judge progress.

Bull case

  • Electrolyzer project pipeline: Electrolyzer project pipeline is USD 8.0B, which supports visibility into future electrolyzer-related demand.
  • Hydrogen plant operations: Georgia green hydrogen plant uptime is 97.0%, efficiency is 92.8%, and availability is 99.7%, indicating strong operating performance where production is already running.
  • Electrolyzer and related revenues: GenEco electrolyzer revenue is USD 0.07B and cryogenic sector revenue is USD 0.07B, showing the business has multiple revenue contributors tied to hydrogen infrastructure.

Bear case

  • Negative profitability: Gross margin is -13.2% and operating margin is -67.0%, reflecting substantial cost pressure relative to revenue in the latest period.
  • Electrolyzer execution headwinds: Revenue impact from electrolyzer negative factors is USD 0.07B, which highlights sensitivity to execution and project conditions.
  • Shipment and delivery impacts: Revenue impact from decision not to ship mobile refuelers is USD 0.02B, and there are smaller revenue impacts from material handling pushout (USD 0.01B) and production delays (cryogenic) (USD 0.01B).
