Understand PhenixFIN Corporation: how it makes money

PhenixFIN Corporation is a business development company that invests in privately negotiated debt and equity securities of small and middle market companies, aiming to earn returns from those portfolio investments.

PhenixFIN’s investment income and overall results are driven by the performance of its privately negotiated debt and equity portfolio, and credit stress shows up through non-accrual portfolio activity.

Business quality (Mixed): The company is focused on private, small and middle market deals across many sectors, so operating focus should center on portfolio breadth and credit quality as reflected by non-accrual metrics.

Bull case

  • Broad exposure across many deal sectors: The firm primarily invests across business services, real estate, automobile, oil and gas, aerospace and defense, durable consumer products, healthcare, education and childcare, and other categories, which can diversify where portfolio opportunities come from.
  • Limited non-accrual at the latest quarter: Non-Accrual Portfolio Companies are 1 and there are 3 non-accrual portfolio company investments, suggesting most portfolio companies are not currently in non-accrual status.

Bear case

  • Credit risk can concentrate in non-accrual situations: With 1 non-accrual portfolio company and 3 non-accrual portfolio company investments, some underlying debt and equity positions are experiencing stress that can affect earnings.
  • Portfolio performance depends on small and middle market companies: Because the strategy targets privately negotiated debt and equity securities of small and middle market companies, results can be sensitive to changes in those companies’ operating conditions.
