Understand OP Bancorp: how it makes money

OP Bancorp is the bank holding company for Open Bank, which provides deposit accounts, a range of loans (including commercial real estate, small business, and mortgages), and transaction services (debit and credit cards, online transfer and bill payment, and letters of credit, plus SWIFT and export advice), earning income from these core banking products and services.

Open Bank’s profit engine is credit performance, since the company’s operating health is reflected in loan loss metrics (allowance for credit losses, nonperforming loans, and net charge-offs), which can offset income from lending and banking services.

Business quality (Mixed): The dataset provides useful credit-quality operating metrics, but it does not include a reportable segment revenue breakdown, limiting visibility into profit drivers by product line.

Valuation: At 8× earnings, OPBK trades 33% below the Banking average (13×). Note: one-time items can distort reported P/E.

Bull case

  • Credit quality is trackable with multiple indicators: The provided metrics include nonperforming loans, net charge-offs (recoveries), and the allowance for credit losses, which together help gauge how loan risk is evolving.
  • Broad lending and banking menu: The bank offers diversified loan types (commercial real estate, small business, consumer, home mortgages) and related banking services (letters of credit, SWIFT and export advice), which can support income across customer needs.

Bear case

  • Loan losses can pressure results: If nonperforming loans rise or net charge-offs increase relative to average gross loans, the allowance for credit losses and credit costs can weigh on profitability.
  • Execution and underwriting risk across many loan categories: The bank serves multiple lending categories (including commercial real estate and consumer and mortgage lending), which can expose performance to sector-specific credit conditions.
