Understand LSB Industries, Inc.: how it makes money

LSB Industries produces and sells nitrogen-based fertilizers (ammonia, ammonium nitrate, urea blends) and industrial chemicals to agricultural and specialty-chemical customers, capturing the spread between product benchmark prices and natural gas feedstock costs. Most revenue flows from ammonium nitrate and nitric acid (40%) and urea (25%), while margins are a function of the gas-to-ammonia price differential rather than volumes.

Profit equals the gas-to-ammonia price spread multiplied through a relatively fixed volume base; when benchmark prices fall toward the natural-gas floor, the operating margin flips negative almost overnight.

Business quality (Weak): Seventy cents of gross margin per revenue dollar and a negative operating margin put this in the 'Weak' quality bucket: the business is a cyclical commodity spread, not a differentiated product.

Valuation: At 19× earnings, LXU trades 39% below the Chemicals average (31×).

Bull case

  • Trading at a 39% valuation discount: The stock carries a 19.2x P/E versus the Chemicals industry average of 31x, a 39% discount, implying the market is pricing in prolonged commodity weakness that may already be turning.
  • Double-digit revenue growth in Q2: Quarterly revenue reached $200M, up 11% year over year, showing the top line is expanding even in a low-margin environment and giving the spread expansion more volume to work with.

Bear case

  • Still losing money at the operating level: Operating margin sits at negative 2% for the quarter, meaning the company is consuming cash after all operating expenses even as revenue grows, and a normal commodity downswing deepens the hole.
