Understand HCI Group, Inc.: how it makes money

HCI Group sells property and casualty insurance for Florida residential properties, offers reinsurance programs, and also owns real estate and runs a web-based information technology business that manages insurance premiums via its platform.

The profit engine is the growth and durability of the insurance policy book, where Premiums in Force and In-Force Premiums feed into Consolidated Gross Premiums Earned, then net profitability is shaped by Premiums Ceded for Reinsurance and supported by Exeo Premiums Managed on Its Platform.

Business quality (Exceptional): Strong operating profitability in the latest reported quarter, with the core driver tied to insurance in-force (premiums) and with reinsurance activity and the Exeo platform contributing to how premiums ultimately convert into earnings.

Valuation: At 7× earnings, HCI trades 44% below the Insurance average (13×). Note: one-time items can distort reported P/E.

Bull case

  • Policy book supports earned premium generation: Premiums in Force and In-Force Premiums measure the ongoing base of coverage the company writes, which then links to Consolidated Gross Premiums Earned and Net Premiums Earned.
  • Reinsurance is a defined part of the economics: Premiums Ceded for Reinsurance is explicitly tracked, and the gap between gross and net premiums provides a direct view into how reinsurance affects the insurance results.

Bear case

  • Florida residential exposure can be concentrated: The company sells homeowners, fire, flood, and wind-only insurance in Florida, so adverse conditions affecting these property and casualty lines could pressure results.
  • Net premium conversion depends on ceding decisions: Because Premiums Ceded for Reinsurance reduces gross premiums to arrive at Net Premiums Earned, changes in reinsurance programs or terms could affect profitability.
