Understand Cboe Global Markets, Inc.: how it makes money

Cboe Global Markets operates options, equities, futures, and FX trading exchanges, and it makes money from trading activity on its platforms through segment net revenue.

Because Cboe is an exchange, its profit engine is transaction-based activity on its trading platforms, so platform trading volumes and related capture metrics are structural drivers of revenue and operating results.

Revenue by segment (latest quarter)
Options$0.5B
North Am Eq$0.1B
Europe APAC Eq$0.1B
Futures$0.0B
Global FX$0.0B
Unallocated$0.6B

Business quality (Strong): The official segment mix is clear, but the provided segment net revenue figures sum to less than the latest quarter’s total revenue, so an Unallocated residual (0.57B) was required to reconcile to 1.3B.

Valuation: At 21× earnings, CBOE trades 38% below the Trading average (34×). Note: one-time items can distort reported P/E.

Bull case

  • High and trackable FX platform activity: The Global FX Average Daily Notional Value Traded on the Cboe FX Platform is 49.9 USD_B, which indicates meaningful ongoing trading throughput.
  • Capture rate provides a direct link from activity to economics: The Global FX Net Capture Rate per One Million Dollars Traded is 2.87, offering an operating metric that ties traded notional to platform economics.

Bear case

  • Exchange revenue depends on ongoing trading levels: If average daily notional traded or other trading activity declines on Cboe platforms, transaction-linked net revenue would likely be pressured.
  • Segment transparency is limited in the provided data: Because provided segment net revenue figures do not sum to total revenue, there is uncertainty about how the remaining 0.57B revenue is distributed across reportable segments.
