How we extract fundamentals from SEC filings

Our fundamentals come directly from the XBRL facts companies file with the SEC, not from a data reseller. We map standardized US-GAAP concepts to income-statement, balance-sheet, and cash-flow line items and key every value to its period-end date.

Every fundamental figure on the site is computed from the XBRL facts a company files with the SEC, not bought from a third-party vendor. When a company submits a 10-K or 10-Q, it tags each financial figure with a standardized US-GAAP concept; we read those tagged facts directly from EDGAR.

The pipeline maps each standardized concept to its place in the financial statements. us-gaap:Revenues and us-gaap:NetIncomeLoss populate the income statement; us-gaap:Assets and us-gaap:Liabilities populate the balance sheet; us-gaap:NetCashProvidedByUsedInOperatingActivities populates the cash-flow statement. Because the concepts are standardized across filers, the same line item can be pulled and compared across thousands of companies.
